UKRAINE: NEW PEACE TALKS IN MINSK

Monday, 09 February 2015 17:59

Eyes will be on Minsk on February 11 as Russian, French, German and Ukrainian leaders are about to discuss a peace plan to solve Ukrainian crisis since the previous agreement signed in September 2014 has not been successful: the crisis has been growing in intensity instead of slowly fading away.

France and Germany called this meeting as they fear that a point of no return might be close to being overpassed. However, there is not so much room for optimism: as UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said, it would be wrong to call it Minsk Plus since there is no official deal yet. In Belarus capital, discussions are expected to be focused on some basic measures aimed to slow the crisis down and which would lead to a new and permanent peace agreement.

It has been always quite clear that destroying Syrian chemical weapons would have been a difficult mission, but the current situation it's more complicated than expected. The first great problem burst out in  December when OPCW was looking for a way to destroy Assad's chemical armoury and no State nor private organization volunteered. Because of that and due to a short amount of available time, OPCW board was forced to solve the “crisis” going with a earlier set aside-option : destroying the chemical material in international waters in more than one step. The second huge problem revealed itself at the end of 2013 and it messed up OPCW schedule: according to their plan, the most dangerous part of Syrian chemical armoury should have been removed from Syrian territory by 31 December but they failed  because of bad weather condition and because of the never-ending clashes between Assad's troops and the rebel groups within the ongoing civil war. Now everything it's on move again but the premises aren't really bright.

“SYRIA FRIENDS” READY TO ENGAGE?

Tuesday, 25 June 2013 11:02

Eleven countries seem ready to increase their engagement in helping rebels group fighting Assad’s regime. That is what emerged from the latest “Syria Friends Group” summit hosted in Doha (Qatar, 21-22 June). Far from the 144 participants of the first Group meeting in Marrakech (12 December 2012), there were only eleven countries in Doha; and yet United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates declared themselves ready and inclined to support the anti-regime guerrilla with weapons and equipment supplies. In Al-Thani, Qatar Emir, «force is necessary to achieve justice, and the provision of weapons is the only way to achieve peace in Syria's case». British Foreign Secretary William Hague declarations followed the same line, although he reiterated that London had yet to take a formal decision: «we won't get a political solution if Assad and his regime think they can eliminate all legitimate opposition by force, and so we do have to give assistance to that opposition», he said.
