This is one of those pieces of news that quickly travels around the world. On Saturday 16, two men were captured by Ukrainian Armed Forces at the contact line near Shchastya (30km from the Russian border). OSCE’s inspectors spoke privately with the two men at a military hospital in Kiev where they had been brought because wounded.  On SMM reports it is said that “both individuals claimed that they were members of a unit of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation”[1].

According to the two men, they were “on a reconnaissance mission”, they “were armed but had no orders to attack” and “Both of them said they had been to Ukraine on missions before”. One of them repeatedly stated that “there were no Russian troops involved in fighting in Ukraine”.

Since the beginning of the crisis in eastern Ukraine, the issue linked to Russian presence on Ukrainian soil has always been alive; and NATO, United States and Russia have been playing a game based on accusations and counteraccusations. This latest episode brings a new piece to an old puzzle. In August 2014 Russian military convoys crossed the border and entered in Ukraine; moreover, the presence of unmarked weaponries and military personnel with no insignia, and the mystery linked to Boris Nemtsov’s dossier created new suspicions. Although the two captured men’s statements shouldn’t be considered as some sort of confession, there are little doubts regarding some kind of Russian involvement in this crisis.

In the meantime, Russia defends herself by saying that the two men were former and not serving soldiers and accused Kiev of beating a convenient testimony out of them.
