Russia – Ukraine: Kiev teared up military agreements

In one simple move, Ukrainian Parliament (the Verkhovna Rada, or Supreme Council) shredded five military agreements that Kiev and Moscow signed 20 years ago, on November 25 1990 in Sochi. Those agreements were key elements on Ukraine – Russia relations and focused on and regulated:

•Transit via Ukraine of Russian troops stationed in Transnistria (a breakaway state part of Moldova, it declared independence in 1990 and on 18 March 2014 it asked to join the Russian Federation).

•Organization of military interstate transportations.

•Mutual protection of classified information.

•Military-intelligence cooperation.

•Defence cooperation.

On May 21, 265 out of 450 deputies voted in favor of the law that trashed those agreements. This may be considered as the umpteenth evidence of the fact that Ukraine and Russia are irreconcilable.
