Italy last December decided to send 500 soldiers to the Sahel, in order to contain Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, Mujao, as well as helping France to protect the uranium mines.

The European Union has decided to invest over 60 million euros in an anti-terrorism force composed of over 11,000 men in the African Sahel. Radicalization and trafficking in human beings are the main threats of the region.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the global network founded by Osama Bin Laden is particularly active in the Sahel and is engaged in the abduction of foreign citizens for ransom purposes as well as regularly attacking UN peacekeeping sites in northern Mali.

The Italians will have to deal with Ansar Dina group led by the Jihadist Iyad Ag Ghaly, the main group responsible for the insurrection in Mali in 2012, the Tuareg, Al Murabitun, led by the Algerian Mokhatar Belmokhtar nicknamed The One Eyed following the loss of left eye fighting in Afghanistan in turn under the command of Ayman Al-Zawahiri, head of Al Qaeda after the death of Osama Bin Laden.

The Italians should not have a combat mission but only "training" of the troops of Niger but if this were not to be the identification of the enemy will not be so easy
