Darfur, southern Sudan. On Saturday 13 July Darfur civil war (ongoing since 2003) showed its latest violence episode: around 9 am an UNAMID patrol (part of the UN-African Union joined force operating in Darfur since 2007 in order to protect civilian population and to guarantee security condition to humanitarian personnel) has fallen into an ambush approximately 25 kilometers west of the Mission's Khor Abeche team site while it was moving from one checkpoint to another. The patrol came under heavy fire from a large unidentified group which engaged the peacekeepers using light weapons and RPG rockets. Seven military personnel were killed and 17 were wounded (13 troopers and 4 police officers); their nationality has not been revealed yet but according to some newspapers they probably belonged to the Tanzanian force.

UN peacekeepers have already been victim of others attack, the last one took place in Eastern Darfur in April when a Nigerian peacekeeper was shot to death. UN is blaming Khartum (Sudan Capital city) and asked President Al Bashir to react quickly in order to bring the guilty party to justice.

Nothing new in a 10 years ongoing civil war which has left more than 300 thousand victim on the ground. Besides, the recent discovery of gold vane and deposit of the rare coltan mineral (used in electronic devices) could easily foster the interethnic war fire: the 16 thousand UNAMID peacekeepers failed in containing violence which has overflew during the last year and involved also the young state of South Sudan (which gained its independence just in 2011). Clashes over those resources have already leapt over geopolitical borders and seem ready to bring the whole region into chaos.
