The current security challenges in the region are pushing many countries to think of an efficient anti-terror strategy. Yet, there are concerns about the real objectives of such a strategy and the countries that should play a role.

Any such strategy should involve deradicalisation, which requires a careful revision of the region’s cultural and political heritage since the end of World War II. The countries that are willing to effect change should become a real model for future solutions. They should initiate a reform process from within, starting with the educational system and going on to developing a just social system that respects citizens and where they can enjoy freedom with no religious and political taboos. Countries cannot assume the responsibility of fighting extremism without cleaning their societies first from extremism, without addressing failure to secure integration, political oppression, the absence of logic, dignity and human values. For example, the security crisis in Europe today has aspects that are entirely different from all aspects in the Arab world. Therefore, it is impossible to think of a collective security strategy developed and developing countries can have that lacks a scientific and systematic vision to deal with potential risks. Thus, regional countries should consider using new tools and strategies to fight terrorism. Moreover, depending only on military and security services would not provide cooperative grounds, especially that extremism expands tremendously among essential institutions of many states. Unfortunately, many countries that are supposed to be part of a new strategy to fight terrorism have a shaky internal political situation and often citizens with extremist mentality which rejects the other or citizens who peddle conspiracy theories due to distortion in thinking and absence of culture. The second category includes mostly the political elite that is clueless, has no future outlook on how to face potential risks and thus is unable to fight extremism. Extremism cannot be confronted unless there is a clear agenda that involves laws that respect human beings and uphold their dignity.  Such a fight cannot only be achieved through eloquent speeches or extended conferences, but by implementing enlightening projects speak louder than words.
